HOW TO STRENGTHEN YOUR STRENGTHS

Would you be fine with a pilot flying you to a desired destination that has failed his Aviation Medical Exam and Flight Training?  Or would you be okay with an orthopedic surgeon performing surgery on you that hasn't had one successful surgery?  I think we all know the answer.

The answer would be an emphatic, no!   Why?  Because we know that their strengths may not be aviation or performing orthopedic surgery.

Inventor of the Clifton StrengthsFinder® and recognized as the Father of Strengths-Based Psychology by an American Psychological Association Presidential Commendation Don Clifton said, “If you spend your life trying to be good at everything, you will never be great at anything.”

Whatever it is you are good at, why not seek to be great at it.  It will change your life if you are able to strengthen your strengths.  You will notice more personal and professional success with the following three strategies:

1.    Stop Focusing on Your Weaknesses.

It can be hard to strengthen your strengths if you are focused on your weaknesses.  When this happens, it will cause you to lose perspective of who you are and what you can become.  Too many times the reason why people don’t achieve is because they are stuck thinking about what they cannot do and what’s not possible versus on what is possible.  Don’t waste any time focusing on your weaknesses because that will only take away from you being at your best with your strengths.

2.    Identify Your Strengths.

Before you can strengthen your strengths, you have to know what your strengths are.  You can start identifying your strengths by asking yourself questions such as:

-    What do I like about myself?

-    What do I enjoy doing?

-    What things do I do easily or naturally that seems difficult for other people?

-    What areas at work do I get my best results?

-    What do people always ask me to help them with?

-    What things do I do that make me feel the most engaged and energized?

-    What things do I do differently than others that make me stand out?

No one is good at everything.  So no matter how much we would like to be good at everything or how much knowledge we gain, there are certain things that that will never be our strengths.  The quicker you are able to identify your strength, the quicker you will be able to achieve more.

3.    Maximize Your Strength.

The top achievers are extremely accomplished because of their ability to maximize their strengths.  Once you stop focusing on your weaknesses and identify your strengths, your next step is to focus on elevating and expanding your strengths.  To maximize your strengths, you will need to look at this final step as a running a marathon sprinting.  You will not be perfect, but you want to see steady progress.  Maximizing your strengths comes down to using strength.

There is no reason why you shouldn’t be able to strengthen your strengths.  It’s time to develop a better you.  Go to the next level by strengthening your strengths.  So what are your strengths?  Where do you plan on starting with strengthening your strengths?

I want to hear from you.  Please leave a comment below or email me directly to share how you plan to strengthen your strengths.
