The Best Way to Lead

The-Best-Way-to-Lead.jpg

Everything in life has a beginning and an end.  Leadership is no different, but where does it start?  Leadership begins with our awesome God.  God’s inspired word says in Proverbs 1:7,

“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; Fools despise wisdom and instruction.”

I can vividly remember times when I did not start with the LORD.  I can honestly say during those times, it was a challenge finishing anything I started.  And even if I was able to finish a project, I realized it wasn’t as successful as it would have been if I hadstarted with the LORD.

Have you ever been in a situation or made a decision and did not know where to start?  Have you received inspiration, but did not know where to start with carrying through with that inspiration?

I hope after you finish reading this post, you will find out where you need to start.  My objective is to help you see the best way to lead is by starting with God.

Start with God

There are two reasons why starting with God is the best way to lead.

1. God Created Everything.  One of the most creative and God breathed books in the Bible is Genesis.  Not only is it a great book because of its creativity, but also because it is the beginning of all things.  John referenced this in John 1:3 when he said,

“All things were made by him; and without him was not anything made that was made.”

One great reason to start everything in your life with God is because he is the Creator of all things.

2. God Created Us With Influence.  Jesus is the greatest leader of all time.  Although he is God, he also took on the form of man to teach us how to lead.  Jesus spoke about leadership in Matthew 5:13-16 when he said,

“You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored?  It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet.  You are the light of the world.  A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.  Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house.  In the same way, let your light shine before others, so they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”

Whatever it is you are leading, start with God.

God created you with influence.  Life is like a canvas and our lives are the paintbrushes.  Make sure you are constantly working on your masterpiece because others are watching.

“You are our letter, written in our hearts, known and read by all men.” ~ 2 Corinthians 3:2

Reasons To Keep Your Mind Sharp

Reasons-To-Keep-Your-Mind-Sharp.jpg

My wife and I are always trying to figure out how to keep our minds sharp.  We feel it is important to the success of our family.

The one thing movies such as Limitless, Inception, Lucy, and Good Will Hunting have in common is being a better version of you by increasing brainpower.

I can vividly remember some days when I have felt my mind isn’t as sharp as it should be.  I am still functional in every sense of the word, but I just don’t feel on top of my game.

Have you ever had this feeling?

Today’s blog will help you discover why and how to keep your mind sharp.

Why You Should Keep Your Mind Sharp

Everyday we will face many challenges and responsibilities that requires us to keep our minds sharp.

There are many people depending on you.  And even if only one person is depending on you, I believe it is reason enough to keep your mind sharp.

Who is dependent on you and your mind being sharp?

I don’t believe your brain can be at it’s best until you know yourself and your needs.  It was Bernard Baruch who said,

“Only as you do know yourself can your brains serve you as a sharp and efficient tool.  Know your own failing, passions, and prejudices so you can separate them from what you see.”

Being yourself helps with sharpening your brain, but also sharpening your brain helps you discover who you really are.

How To Keep Your Mind Sharp

We have discussed being you in the blog titled, 3 Powerful Ways to Market Yourself (Click on link).  Today let’s talk about how to keep your mind sharp.  There are 6 Strategies To Keep Your Mind Sharp.

1. Exercise Your Body.  The best way to exercise your mind is to exercise your body.  It is a natural phenomenon to increase brain activity with bodily exercise.  As one of my professors would say in Physical Therapy school, “Everything in our bodies loves oxygen.”  The brain is no different.  Exercise increases oxygen to all your body parts, which includes our brains.

2. Exercise Your Mind.  There are many ways to exercise your mind such as crossword puzzles, brainy games, etc.  I think one of the best ways to exercise your mind is by reading.  It was Harry S. Truman that said,

“Not all readers are leaders, but all leaders are readers.”

I do believe we all are leading someone, which means we all should be reading.

3. Quiet Your Mind.  Sometimes all you need is a little quiet time to boost your brainpower.  Everyone needs some meditation time.  If you are unable to set aside some meditation time, it will make sharpening your mind a little challenging.

4. Reward Your Mind.  This is a straightforward point.  We all know the affects of sleep, especially deep sleep.  Sleep deprivation compromises your brains ability to be creative, critically think, and problem solve.  Reward your mind with sleep and it will reward you with better functioning.

5. Maintain Healthy Relationships.  You have heard me say many times in my blogs, “Life is all about relationships.”  I still haven’t changed my mind when it comes to that statement.  The more we are able to communicate with others who we have a healthy relationship with; it helps to sharpen our minds.  Naturally we weren’t created to be alone, so we need healthy human interaction to keep our minds sharp.

6. Keep Laughing.  Any and all research supports the need for laughter in our lives.  Life can be a challenge at times, so we have to find time to laugh.  Stress can choke our minds from being sharp, but laughter can be invigorating causing a sharpening of your mind.

You deserve the best.  So give yourself the best.  Whether you use all these strategies or just one, you will find yourself having a sharper mind if you practice just a few of these strategies.

Question: What could you achieve with a sharper mind?  Leave your comments below.

Why You Should Have A Child-Like Persistence

Why-You-Should-Have-A-Child-Like-Persistence.jpg

When I first started blogging almost 2 years ago, I wrote about a child-like persistence.  I now have a few more years of parenting under my belt, which basically means I still have a lot to learn.

I have learned so many unique lessons from my three beautiful boys.  Each of them has been an amazing blessing from God.  The one thing each of them has taught me is persistence.

If you are a parent, you are quite familiar with the daily fun of having a child.  Some children may be more energetic and out-going than others, but most children like testing their limits.

Setting Boundaries

As adults, we start setting boundaries.  Many of the boundaries we set are healthy.  For example, we have to set financial boundaries, otherwise we would be bad stewards of our money.  It is also important that we set healthy boundaries with our families, church, and work.

Going Beyond Our Limits

When I reflect on my childhood, I don’t remember setting many boundaries.

I recall doing things as a child that I would not give one thought to as an adult.  Things such as making a homemade bike ramp about 5-6 feet tall and jumping a bike off of it.  Okay, my brother and I was a little crazy for attempting this stunt.  But we did it and managed to survive the “Dare-Devil” stunt jumps.  We could have killed ourselves many of times, but we survived and I'm here to write about it.  The interesting thing is, I now can see this same persistence in my boys.  But I believe most kids have some of this in them.

Setting boundaries can be a great thing, but it can also be a terrible thing.  Please let me explain.

Sometimes we use boundaries to make excuses for why we cannot move forward in life with our goals and dreams.

What are your aspirations?

Sometimes those things we think are healthy boundaries are only hindering limitations.

Limitations hold us back.  They keep us stuck.  When we constantly place limitations on our lives, we then begin to feel that things will never change.  Quite frankly, we begin giving up and quitting at life when we are calling these limitations healthy boundaries.

This is one of the reasons why we must go beyond our limitations.

Have A Child-Like Persistence

As adults, we become less apt to stretch ourselves.  There is a reason why we have the old adage of “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.”  I would respectfully disagree with this statement.  I would rephrase the statement to read,

“You can’t teach a know-it-all anything.”

Yes, I know it does not have the ring of the old adage, but it is so true.  Don’t be this person.

Go beyond your limitations!  Learn more.  Dream more.  Achieve more.

How do you go beyond your limits?

You need a child-like persistence.  When I think about the persistence of children I think of one phrase we have all heard and possibly have said is, “Are we there yet?”

Why a child-like persistence?

1. Children Are Always Learning.  Children are always exploring because of their many curiosities.  Don’t settle for living the way you are currently live.  Explore various opportunities to grow your parenting skills, your job status, your leadership skills, your business, your financial freedom, your church, etc.  Continue learning and you will find that you will continue to grow.

2. Children Aren’t Afraid To Show Emotion.  Why do adults hold back their emotions?  We try to call it being professional, but we end up tricking ourselves to be unemotional.  Emotions can be productive or counter-productive.  I’m not telling you to throw fits and fall in the floor when you don’t get your way, but I am suggesting for you to get excited when something excites you.  If used the right way, emotions can inspire and motivate that “Go beyond” attitude.

3. Children Are Hopeful.  One word that describes most children is hopeful.  The odds could be completely against a child, but they we look you square in the eye and tell you that they still believe.  Hope believes.  If you are going to go beyond your limitations, you will need to believe.  Believe in God.  Believe in yourself.  Believe in your team of supportive individuals.

Developing a child-like persistence is of the utmost importance if we plan on being successful in life.  Many times we quit too soon.  We stop before we reach our blessing.

Please do not make this mistake.  You need a child-like persistence.  Take calculated risk, but more than anything be persistent.  Start today!

Question: What things are you working in your life that requires you to have a child-like persistence?  Leave your comments below.

Every Hand Has A Story

Every-Hand-Has-A-Story.jpg

I have seen many things in my life, but one of the most fascinating things I have been able to experience is exploring the human body inside and out during human anatomy class when I was in physical therapy (PT) school.

There are many lessons I learned during PT School, but my anatomy class gave me a greater appreciation for God and His creativity.

I would like to specifically talk about the hand today in our blog.  No, I am not getting ready to give you a lecture on the hand, but I would like to share some fascinating thoughts.

Humbling Experience

My anatomy class was a humbling experience.  It taught me how great and amazing God is.

As PT students, we had a great respect for those who donated their bodies for us to learn and explore the genius of God.

Every part of the human body is fascinating to me, but today I want to talk a little about the hand.

The hand isn’t the biggest structure in the body, but it has the most bones.  The most interesting thing I’ve found about the hand is that every hand has a story.

Just ask a hand orthopedic specialist or a hand therapist, they will tell you that every hand has a story.  The size, texture, etc. will tell you a lot about a person.  A hand will explain a life from birth to death.

The Greatest Hand Story

The greatest hand story is the Story of my Savior.  I would have loved to examine the hands of Jesus.

Although I wasn’t able physically examine his hands, he has the greatest story known to man and his hands tell the story.

1. Child Hands.  Jesus started his life just like we did.  He lacked coordination and fine motor skills in his hands as a child.  As a child, His hands lacked maturity.

2. Young Man Hands.  As Jesus continued to grow and develop, He began to notice the strength in his hands increasing.  But like us, He had strength and endurance as a young man, but He lacked endurance.  In other words, He was quick to work and start things, but was yet capable of finishing things.

3. Carpenter Hands.  At this stage of Jesus’ life, His hands were mature.  If we had the ability to examine his hands as carpenter, we would see stronger hands filled with calluses, splinters, and blisters.  They did not have the machines, lotions, crèmes, etc. when Jesus was a carpenter.  So his hands had plenty wounds from working with various pieces of wood.  This line of work naturally taught our Savior patience and perseverance.

Jesus also had to be creative, insightful, and purposeful.  Our Savior was able to take a chunk of wood and turn it into a beautiful piece of furniture.  He would spend much time turning nothing into something.  As a carpenter, our Father was preparing His hands to deal with our hearts.  It is quite easy to feel unworthy, unable, insecure, and doubtful as humans.  But Jesus’ hands are prepared to deal with all our emotions.  Just like the wood he once carved, He has experience turning what we would think would be junk into masterpieces.  It’s time for us to trust His carpenter hands.

4. Compassionate Hands.  Carpentry taught Jesus many lessons, but one day He had to put down the wood and started working on the heart of man.  He began preaching at young age, but it wasn’t until His hands developed compassion that He was able to greater things to change our world.

The skills of creativity and vision He developed as a carpenter filled Him confidence to perform miracles in the name of our Father.  He was able to heal the sick, cast demons, bring the dead back to life, still storms, walk on water, open the eyes of the blind, and change water to wine.  And He was able to do much more, but His hands were suited to perform these miracles because of His care for our world.  He had compassionate hands to serve mankind.  His purpose today was the same back then, He wanted to help humans deal with the struggles of life because He was very familiar with life’s pains.

5. Crucified Hands.  Everything before this point in Jesus life gave Him the strength to carry the cross.  It’s hard to go anywhere without noticing a image or replica of a cross.  Many people buy gold, platinum, and silver crosses and dangle them from their necks.  The cross is a reminder of our Savior’s crucified hands.

When Jesus died on the cross, the nails alone going through his hands shattered and broke many of His hand bones.  The holes from the nails caused blood to pour out of His hands, but also it exposed the nerves, veins and arteries in the location of the nails.  His crucified hands were full of pain.

The pain in His hands represents our struggles, our pains, our idiosyncrasies, and our lives.  He took the form of man and took on all of our pains to better our lives.

6. Open Hands.  If you remember the story of Jesus, He died but also rose.  So our Savior is still alive and His hands are still at work in our lives.  Jesus is still at work with his hands open wide inviting everyone possible to examine His hands.  He knows that if you take a look at his hands, you will start looking at your hands quite differently.

What’s Your Story?

Remember, all our hands have a story.  What have hands been saying up to this point in your life?  What are they saying now?  What will they say in the future?

Your story is just as important as anyone else’s story.

There is no way we can be just like Christ, but make sure when you and others look at the story of your hands that your story will include and embrace the beautiful life of our Christ.  I don’t believe this is an unreasonable expectation because every time Jesus looks at His hands, He can see your life in the palm of His hands because we are part of HIStory.

4 Steps to Remove Your Doubts

4-Steps-to-Remove-Your-Doubts.jpg

Have you ever doubted yourself?

Doubt can cause many problems.  It can be bring on feelings of low self-esteem, insecurity, frustration, depression, and despair.

With the various challenges we face in our world today, it is quite easy to doubt.  The deeper a person’s doubt further complicates life.  Doubt causes an unstable, unsettled, and unsure attitude.  An attitude of this kind will hinder growth and development in many aspects of our lives.

When doubt is present in our lives, it is hard to have peace.  Why do you doubt?  What do you doubt?  One of the biggest reasons to remove doubt is to live a peaceful life.  So let’s look at four ways to remove your doubt to make more room for peace.

4 Ways to Remove Your Doubt

1. Be Investigative.  Before you can remove your doubt, you need to know what you doubting.  Discover what your doubts are.  All doubt aren’t bad.  Doubting is definitely bad if you doubt yourself or your Creator.  However, to find out if you are having good or bad doubts, you must be investigative.

2. Be Intentional.  Have a purpose for everything you do.  Be purposeful especially with the way you speak.  Speak with positive affirmations.  What we say definitely has a affect on how we think and what we do.  So speak positive words of encouragement in order to complete the first step in removing your doubt.

3. Be Involved.  Once you have discovered your doubts and have made intentional decisions to fix them, now you must respond with effort and energy.  You cannot expect to remove your doubts or change anything without action!

4. Be Inspired.  The final step to removing your doubt is being consistently inspired.  Inspiration will keep your doubts at bay and eventually will let you rid yourself of them.  Be inspired and believe that you can remove your doubt.

Look Up!

Look-Up.jpg

When we transition into adulthood, we grow out of many things we once did as a children.  Rightfully so.

As a child, I would just look up.  I would look up in amazement of the colorful blue hues in the sky.  I was in amazement of the stars, the sun, the moon, the clouds, the rain, and rainbows.  I have always been amazed by my surroundings, especially nature and my love for being outside.

Still Looking Up

As an adult, I’m still looking up.

I still look up in amazement of the beauty that spans across our skies.  However, I now look up in amazement and awe for who created the natural and beautiful artwork.  Frankly, it is unfathomable!

No matter what I am going through, good or bad, I look up.

I don’t look up out of arrogance or conceit.  I will never look up to ignore the present problems of our world.  I look up because there’s no sense in looking back, looking side to side, or even looking forward.

I look up because of the importance of my vertical relationship.  I look up for the hope that lies before me. I look up to find the positive in everything.  I look up to see things from God’s perspective.

Why Look Up?

It is important to look up to turn your attention to things that matter most; to examine your expectations.  Looking up can give you a new or different sense of direction.

So, give it a try.  Take some time today, everyday, to step outside and bask in the glory around you; breathe in your surroundings and look up!

Look up to God!

ABC’s of Success

ABC’s-of-Success.jpg

Many people are looking for various secrets to attaining success.  What if I told you that there are no secrets to success?  In addition, what if I told you those things we considered secrets are actually common knowledge and should be a daily common practice in our lives.

The foundation for success lies in these factual tips I will be sharing with you.  Times may change and people may change, but these facts about success will always hold true.  Let’s look at the ABC’s of success.

ACTION

It is hard to have any success without action.  Nothing happens without action.  Action means putting in motion.  Forward movement is needed for any success.

BEST

We don’t have to be art our best all the time, but we must do our best to enjoy any kind of success.

CHANGE

Change is a friend of success.  Your success will be dependent on your ability to adjust, readjust, adjust, and readjust again.

DETERMINATION

Success requires perseverance.  Determination is an invaluable asset.  You will face difficulties and bumps in the road, but be determined about reaching your goals.

ENERGY

The right energy will give you many opportunities to be successful.  Our attitude determines our energy.  The right attitude will give you the right energy bringing success into your life.

FOCUS

You will need to ignore some things in order to focus on those things that matter most to achieve your success.

GOALS

Goals are important.  Don’t let anyone tell you different.  Goals are a road map to your success.

HARDWORK

You can work smart all you want, but you will also have to work hard.  You will have to go the extra mile, be the example, and serve like no one else.  All success comes with hard work.

INSPIRATION

Success usually starts with inspiration.  Discover what inspires you and use that to fuel your achievements.

JOY

Success should come with great pleasure and happiness.  Why do we want to be successful in the first place?  One of the reasons we want to be successful is to receive pleasure, happiness, or joy as a by-product.

KNOWLEDGE

At some point, to be successful you will need all the facts, information, and skills to achieve your success.  The probability of failure on your road to success is high.  As stated earlier in the blog, failure is just another way to gain more knowledge about how to be more successful.

LEADERSHIP

Without leadership, it will be impossible to obtain success.  You will need to take leadership over your attitude, ideas, goals, and actions.

MASTERY

Whenever you find success, it is usually preceded by skill.  Success doesn’t come from luck, but success happens when we skillfully can apply these ABC’s to our daily life.

NURTURING

Success is like a baby.  It needs nurturing.  I discussed the meaning of success in Are You Successful? (Click link)  What you consider success needs nurturing.  If you nourish your success, just like a baby it will continue to grow and develop into greater successes.

OBJECTIVES

Everything in life has purpose and meaning.  Your success should as well.  If you feel your success has no purpose, it may be time to seek out new success.

PASSION

Success comes from passion.  Without passion, it will be hard to experience success.  There will be days when you may feel like giving up, but your passion for your success will continue to drive you.

QUALITY

There should be a quality to your success.  Quality deals with something being reliable, maintainable, or sustainable.  Success should be reliable, maintainable, or sustainable.

RESOLVE

Failure is inevitable when seeking out success.  You will make mistakes, but failure isn’t the end of your ability to succeed.  Settle in your mind to fail, learn, and succeed.

STRATEGY

A strategy is different than your goals.  Although they are both maps to achieve your success, a strategy is more like your action plan to complete your goals.  Your strategy is your game plan.

TEAMWORK

Success cannot happen without teamwork.  You have heard the phrase, “It takes a team to achieve a dream.”  Whether you need assistance or not, it is always good to have a support team to endorse your success.

USEFUL

You will need to be useful in order to receive any degree of success.  Useful means you are functional, efficient, beneficial, helpful, profitable, or productive.  Successful people are useful people.

VISION

Vision brings success.  Why?  It’s because successful people or organizations must be able to envision their future brighter than their present.  Vision allows for clarity of purpose, goals to be met, solutions to be made, and productive work to be completed.

WEIRD

You had to see this one coming.  There are a thousand reasons why weird will promote your success.  Anyone who is successful did not get there by being like everyone else.  But quite the opposite, they became successful by being weird, unique, and different.  These people are able to capitalize on being themselves.

X-FACTOR

Similar to the word weird, x-factor refers to something or someone who is indefinable.  Not only are these things and people indefinable, but they also make a significant impact on the various outcomes.  Successful people are x-factors.  It is hard define what they are good at because they possess so many intangible qualities that make them an x-factor.

YOUTHFUL

When I use the word youthful, I don’t mean young in age.  Successful people are fresh, spry, active, vigorous, active, spirited, and full of energy.  If you are in search for success, it’s time to find your youthfulness.  I have never believed the phrase, “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.”  So, “Out with the old” and “in with the new.”

ZESTFUL

If you have ever watched a cooking show, you have heard words such as “We will add zest to the sauce.”  Zest has to do with enthusiasm, eagerness, fire, sparkle, passionate energy, excitement, or spice.  Successful people always discover ways of adding zest to their life and the lives of others, which makes them even more successful.

Question: What one word describes success to you?  Please explain why.  Leave your comments below.

Why Pray?

Why-Pray.jpg

Have you ever sat down and considered the challenges you face everyday?

We face a wide range of challenges daily and I don’t know anyone who is immune to adversity or difficult times.  Even the best of us will have our moments of doubt, fear, uncertainty, or uneasiness.

How do you get through these unfortunate times?

Why We Pray

Everything I have is because of God’s providential power.  I pray because I’m grateful to God for who He is.  I pray to God because of what He has done, what He is doing, and what He will do.

I am a firm believer in praying whether times are good or bad.

I have had my fair share of misfortunes and I know there will be future mishaps.

Your challenges are completely different than mine, but we can share in the common thought of talking to our Creator about a resolve to fix our troubles.

What are you in need of today?

Life can be an unpredictable journey.  In our global news, we are witnessing more natural disasters.  In our local news, it seems as if violent crimes are becoming more widespread.  Third world countries are suffering from starvation, in-country wars, and inhumane actions.

We have taken notice of more divorces and consequently we are noticing more children growing up without fathers.  Along with these domestic challenges, many families are facing unemployment causing catastrophic financial crises.

I think it’s time for us to PRAY!

Not just as a country, but also as a world we need to PRAY!

When We Pray

When we pray, God wants us to pray from our hearts.  More than anything, God wants us to pray with a genuine, sincere, and a spirit of realness.

I have two great prayers I think we all will benefit from during our life’s journey.  Please print these prayers out.  Place them on your nightstand, cubicle wall, work desk, cell phone wallpaper, computer wallpaper, etc.  When we pray, we remind ourselves that God is with us.  No matter who you are and what you do, the realization is we all need God.

I was talking to a friend of mine at work last week and she shared this prayer with me.  I want to share these beautiful words with you as well.

No matter where you are and what you are going through, make time to talk to God.

Question: Why do you pray?  Leave your comments below.

3 Reasons Why Positive Self-Talk is Necessary

3-Reasons-Why-Positive-Self-Talk-is-Necessary.jpg

Many people are turned off when they hear the topic of self-talk, but self-talk is necessary if it is positive.

We all have a little voice in our heads.  The question is - Is your inner voice positive or negative?

How many times have you spoke positive or negative words and what you spoke ended up becoming a reality?  Why does this happen?  This happens because what we speak comes directly from our hearts.  And whatever is in our hearts, we will make it a priority to major on those things.

In this short blog, I want to discuss 3 Reasons Why Positive Self-Talk is Necessary.

3 Reasons Why Positive Self-Talk is Necessary

Reason #3 - To Silence the Negative Self-Talk.  We all want to be successful, but it is hard to be successful with negative self-talk.  Negative self-talk will talk you out of any success meant of your life.  Negative self-talk will have you doubting, hating, indecisive, uncertain, and skeptical about your life’s purpose.  To quiet those voices, you will need positive self-talk.

Reason #2 - To Keep You Focused.  Positive self-talk not only silents the inner negative voice, but it also helps you to focus on the accomplishments you need to achieve.  Depending on what you are trying to accomplish, positive self-talk reminds you of the process and strategies needed to meet your goals.  The more focused you are will give you the better opportunity to be successful.

Reason #1 - To Increase Opportunities to Prosper.  The number one reason to practice positive self-talk is to increase your opportunities to prosper.  Who doesn’t want an opportunity to prosper?  If you are a consistent reader of my blogs, you know how I define prosperity.  Prosperity has nothing to do with any materialistic gains, but it has everything to do moving forward.  When you discover ways of moving forward, you will discover a great deal of success in any area of your life.

How to Build an Indestructible Character

How-To-Build-An-Indestructible-Character.jpg

I have seen men and women that I thought were great leaders, but during difficult times I discovered a lack of integrity and honesty.  These men and women have great work ethic, but they lacked one essential quality every leader should possess being character.

When leaders lack character, it goes without saying that those following will lack character as well.

How do you know if you have character?

Character

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. stated one of the greatest quotes of all time when it comes to character.  He said,

“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands I moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”

The quality of one’s character is dependent on an individual’s reputation.  Character is all about consistent demonstration of good positive qualities.

Do you have character?

After speaking to a group of men and women leaders this past weekend, I decided it would be great idea to share a short list of helpful tips that builds an indestructible character.  No matter what anyone says about you, just follow these tips and you will discover your character being durable and unshakable.

8 Ways to Build an Indestructible Character

1. Be True to Yourself.  How many times have we seen a person attempting be someone else?  In such cases, these individuals end up coming across as a pretender.  There’s a quote that says, “Be careful who you pretend to be; you might forget who you are.”  And if you forget who you are, no one else will know who you are.

2. Be Passionate.  Never ride the passion of someone else, but let your passion speak for itself.

3. Be Family Oriented.  The way you treat your family will speak volumes to others about how you will treat them.  You don’t have to treat everyone like they are part of your blood family.  However, if you demonstrate disdain and disrespect to those you love, others will feel like you will be disrespectful to them.

3. Be Observant.  Be alert!  Those with great character are alert and pay close attention to detail.

4. Be in Control.  If you are going to build a character for yourself, you will need self-control.  Self-control is knowing when and when not to speak or act.  It has everything to do with being discipline enough to make great decisions.

5. Be Humble.  People with an indestructible character know how to act because the portray humility.  These people have a great reputation because they have a great deal of respect for themselves and others.

6. Be Friendly.  The reason why some people are able to build an indestructible character has everything to do with how they treat people.  They have a good reputation for treating people the right way.  If you are going to build an indestructible character, you will need to be aware of how friendly, warm, and welcoming you are as a leader.

7. Be Patient.  It takes a tremendous amount of patience to build an indestructible character.  Great character is revealed when people are patient.  If a person has a difficult time being patient, he or she will have a reputation for being impatient, restless, anxious, nervy, irritated, and short-tempered.

8. Be Teachable.  Those with great character are always willing to learn more.  They don’t feel like they know it all.  One of the biggest reasons why people have great reputations is because they are willing to adapt and change.  Nothing in life stays the same, so we should get use to being patient and be teachable if we want an indestructible character.

There are many other ways to build an indestructible character, but I wanted to share a short list of things you could look at today and possibly change or enhance to improve your leadership skills.  Stay tune to future blogs to discover various other ways to develop great character.

Question(s): In what ways have you built an indestructible character for your life?  Or what are some other things you have seen in others with a great reputation?  Leave your comments below.

Are You Successful?

Are-You-Successful.jpg

What defines success?

We discussed how there are various definitions for success and what to do to receive your success in 3 Must Do’s While Waiting on Your Success (click link).

I had a great conversation with one of the members of our community.  In our conversation, we discussed success.  One of the primary questions was - What is success?

Success

Many people associate success with a degree, having a nice job, how much money is in one’s bank account, house size, class of car, or wearing a certain style of clothing.

What are your desires?  What do you want out of life?  How do you define success?

We all have varying definitions of success, but the true definition of success is the attainment or accomplishment of one’s goals.  At the end of the day,

“You define what success means to you.”

Are you successful?

So you and only you can answer the question of whether you are successful or not.  We just discovered how success depends on the accomplishment of your goals.

What are your goals?

Annually, I set personal, professional, and spiritual goals for myself.  Also, my wife and I set goals for our family.  My most important goals have nothing to do with any of the things we discussed earlier.

Success to me is defined by two things:

1. Love for God.

2. Love for Family.

Please don’t get me wrong.  I want to be the best professional I can be.  I want to build wealth for my family.  I want to help others discover financial independence and develop wealth for their families.

However, I will never sacrifice these goals for the most important responsibilities in my life, which includes commitment to God and my family.

1. Love for God.  God is my Creator.  Without his creativity, I would not have any my gifts or abilities.  He gave me the greatest gift ever known to man by giving me His only Son.  So I will forever be loyal to the Calling of my Father in heaven.  As long as I am faithful to my God and His Son, I will always feel that I am living a successful life.

2. Love for Family.  I have been blessed with a beautiful family.  I have been placed on this earth to be a respectful and loving husband to my beautiful wife.  I have also been given the responsibility to be an example to my three boys.  As a father, I have been called to give life to my sons.  I don’t have a perfect family, by we are striving to follow the perfect love of God and do our best to support one another in our life’s journey.

It’s important to set individual goals.  Start today.  And start with those things that matter most to you.  Just remember, you define your own success.  Without goals, we will never know how successful we can be.

Question:  So, are you successful?  Leave your comments below.

Preparing Our Children for Future Challenges

Preparing-Our-Children-for-Future-Challenges.jpg

Over the last century, we have seen a rise in popularity with professional sports.  Professional athletes are making more and more money these days and enjoying luxuries that some professional athletes a century ago could never imagine.  It does spark a desire in many children’s heart to be a professional athlete.

Although many children have aspirations of living with these many luxuries, the real reason to let our children play sports has everything to do with sports being a great teacher.

I was reminded of this thought while watching and coaching my sons this past season.  I have played and promoted being active with some team sporting activity all my life, especially for children.  Team sports are great for teaching life lessons.

I fell in love with basketball as a child.  Nothing stopped my brother and I from playing ball.  No matter the weather conditions or our health at times, we would find a way to play basketball.  It may have been our own backyard, someone else’s backyard, a community center, school, or a church gym; we were going to work basketball into our schedule.

Basketball taught my brother and I many lessons.  We may have never played professional basketball, but we carried many of these lessons throughout life.  So let me share some of these life lessons.

Life Lessons Learned From Playing Team Sports

1. You won’t win them all.  Win or lose have a right attitude.

2. There is no “I” in team.  Never underestimate the power of teamwork.

3. Good things come to those who practice the right way.  Practice makes perfect.

4. Success can only occur with effective communication.

5. Everyone needs a good coach or mentor.

6. Make the most of every moment because you never know when it be your last.

7. Unselfish actions are the best ways to inspire your team.

8. Everyone on the team has something to offer.

There are many other reasons for sports, but these are 8 of the primary reasons why I believe kids should get involved with sports.  I am still practicing these life lessons in all of my business dealings.  This is one of the reasons my wife and I have encouraged our boys to play team sports.

Just about every job these days requires you to work with other people as a team, so why not start preparing your children now for the challenges they will face tomorrow.

Question: Are there some other life lessons we can learn from team sports?  If so, please share.  Leave your comments below.

3 Must Do's While Waiting on Your Success

3-Must-Dos-While-Waiting-on-Your-Success.jpg

Success comes in all shapes and sizes.  If I asked 1,000 people to define success, I probably would receive 1,000 different answers.  Some would be similar, but each answer would be unique to each individual’s desires, goals, and aspirations.

Living in America, it is easy to want instant success.  But what happens if success doesn’t come quick?

When you think of successful people, most of those success stories took a while to formulate.  In other words, it didn’t happen over night.  Matter fact, behind just about every success story, you will find a person or an organization that practiced these 3 Must Do’s While Waiting on Your Success.

3 Must Do’s While Waiting on Your Success

1. Be Patient.  Your time is coming.  I know you have heard hose words before, but believe it.  Say it to yourself.  If you read my blogs, you know that I am an optimist.  However, I am a realist as well.  When it comes to your success, the reality is you have to speak well of aspirations.  In most cases, no one will support your dreams and goals if you don’t.  If you don’t believe it, you will not give your goals, dreams, aspirations, or your success any hope.  No matter where you are, you will get to your destination.  You will get better.  You will grow your business.  You will be a better parent.  You will discover your life’s purpose.  You will find that special someone.  You will be a dynamic leader.  You will…  You will…  You will…  You just have to be patient.

2. Be Happy for Others.  Most successful people are able to see the best in others even when they cannot see the best in themselves.  This happens because before any successful person reaches success, he or she has been patient and knows what it feels like to wait on success.  So if you are waiting on your success, be happy for those headed that way or those who are already successful.

3. Be a Forever Learner.  The first two must do’s are very important, but this point is one of the major keys to success.  No matter where we are in life, we should want to keep growing and developing our gifts and abilities.  While waiting on your success, keep learning.  Research, read, study, and keep applying yourself.  Whatever you do, please don’t sit idle.  Keep learning and you will keep growing, which will prepare you for other future successes.

When you look back on the track record of the successful, you will see these points practiced in their wait for success.  Even after success has been achieved, those who are successful still practice these 3 must do’s because new challenges and successes are always on the horizon.

Question: What are you doing while waiting for your success?  If you have reached your goals in life, what have you done to achieve that level of success?  Leave your comments below.

3 Powerful Ways to Market Yourself

3-Powerful-Ways-to-Market-Yourself.jpg

One time.  That is it.  You may only have one time to market yourself.

It is easy to take for granted first impressions.

I had an opportunity to break away from the hustle and bustle of my daily work responsibilities to market with a few medical doctors.  I want to share just a few things that I observed from my marketing efforts that will help you personally or professionally.

Believe it or not, we are all marketers.  The question is - What are you marketing?

What is Marketing?

I believe everyone knows what defines marketing.  If not, marketing is just communicating the value of a product.

You have a product, but what is your product?  Personally, your product may be your smile, a word of encouragement, the ability to listen, etc.  Professionally, your product may be an actual piece of merchandise or a skill set.  Regardless of whether we are speaking of personal or professional marketing, we all have a product to market.

If you are unsure of what your product is, then think about those things most important to you.  For example, I have been blessed to be part of several different business ventures, but there are three responsibilities that outweigh any of my business ventures.

Three of my greatest responsibilities are being a Christian, being a husband, and being a father.  Yes, in that order.  Because of my three great responsibilities, I know my greatest products are these three things.

What are your personal and professional products?  Write your products down, and then keep reading.

Now you have an idea about what your product may be.  The next big question would be - How are you communicating your product?

We all know how to communicate, but we will always be improving when it comes to our communication skills.   It will certainly be these case when it comes to marketing our product.  It is great to have a product, but the biggest concern when it comes marketing is communicating your product.

Since I started talking about my greatest responsibilities being my product, let’s discuss how to communicate these products.  As a Christian, my daily walk with Christ is the way I communicate the product of my Christianity.  As a husband, my communication is my daily unconditional love for my wife.  As a father, my communication is my daily love, support, and commitment to them and God.

3 Powerful Ways to Market Yourself

With the same sheet of paper you wrote down your products, now I want you to write down how you communicate those products.  I want to share with you 3 powerful that help you communicate these products in a more effective way if you are not already doing it.

1. Discover Your Product.  We have discussed this point, but I must add that this is one of the greatest ways of discovering purpose for your life.  Marketing is all about COMMUNICATION.  Well, we can’t communicate what we don’t know we have.  You must recognize the gifts you have been blessed with to properly market yourself.  Some of us have similar gifts, but we also have unique gifts that make us very different and marketable personally and professionally.

2. Communicate Your Product.  Remember our products can different things, but in a nutshell our product is who we are.  It is our personality, patience, love, caring, compassion, thoughtfulness, drive, self-reliance, integrity, passion, faith, willpower, communication, etc.  These are just a few qualities that define our product, but also communicate our product.  You shouldn’t have to shout your product out loud, but you should communicate your product with the way you live whether it is personally or professionally.

3. Stay True to Your Product.  Once you have discovered and communicated your product, there will be others who will doubt you and may cause you to start to doubt yourself.  Whatever you do, stay true to your product.  The loyalty to your product will provide amazing opportunities to promote your life personally and professionally.

The power in marketing yourself is simply being you.  The best marketers are able to make the most of every opportunity in order to leave a long-lasting impression.  If you are able to leave enough long-lasting impressions on others, you will find yourself leaving a dynamic impact on our world.

Question: How are you currently marketing yourself?  Leave your comments below.

Gird UP!

Gird-Up.jpg

“MAN UP! WOMAN UP!” You’ve heard these phrases, but what exactly does each phrase mean?  I just had to get the internet definition for myself, so you may be interested as well.

I saw definitions for it such as, “step up to the plate,” “buck up,” “toughen up!”

MacMillan Dictionary puts it best in my opinion: “to be brave or to take responsibility for the consequences of your actions.” 1

MacMillan Dictionary also makes the following valid point: “we … seem to have come full circle, using a word infused with gender-specific stereotypes in a gender-neutral way.” 1

I heard a different perspective from someone that made me change my tune a little bit about using such phrases as “MAN UP!” or “WOMAN UP!”  In summary basically, some perceive these phrases as phrases that don’t promote gender-equality and contribute to the great divide for men vs. women.  In addition, the author stated that sometimes we just pick things up in our everyday language and loosely use it without really considering the underlying meaning and where and how the wording derived and the impact it could have.2

That’s great food for thought.

So, I am taking a different stance and I am in no way trying to impose on your opinion or usage of any certain phrase. I am just stating my own thoughts and opinions.

I choose to take a different stance going forward due to the awesome responsibilities and privileges set before me.

Just hear me out on this.

Daily, we face an overwhelming list of to do’s and tasks that must get done no matter what.  There are actions you must put forth for yourself because no one else is going to do it for you.

Each and every single day, you have to do what it takes to advance your life.  There are things you have to do or they just won’t get done.

It is our responsibility to pursue our own dreams and goals even when those around us think we are absolutely out of our mind.

There is no need in complaining – what resolve comes from complaining anyway?

Making excuses does not lead to progress – it only leads to more frustration.

So, in order to get things done going forward, my stance is this:  I AM GOING TO “GIRD UP!”

Come on, join me, let’s start a trend.  Start tweeting this, post this on Facebook, and start using this phrase:

#GirdUp!

Let’s Just Do It!  Do what you have to do! #GirdUp! Get your bearings and just get it done (whatever IT is)!

"Now, gird up your loins (Get Yourself Ready) (Brace yourself) (Prepare Yourself) and arise (Stand Up), and speak to them all which I command you. Do not be dismayed before them, or I will dismay you before them.” ~ Jeremiah 1:17

“Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind (prepare your minds for action), be sober (be serious) (keep a clear head) (be perfectly attentive), and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ” ~ 1 Peter 1:13

Spring Your Perspective

Spring-Your-Perspective.jpg

Blue, Partly Cloudy Skies Crisp, Fresh air Green, green, and more green Buds, Blooms, and Blossoms Birds chirping Bees buzzing

All of these are very obvious signs of Spring!  Hooray!  Spring is here!

It’s time to get outside again and tend to gardens and mow the grass, ride bicycles, and the best part of spring, with a good spring wind is  fly a kite!

Now, we go from cabin fever to spring fever.  The urge to clean the dust bunnies and change the clothes for the season emerges.  “Good riddance” to toboggans, scarves, extra layers, and coats and in with the short sleeves, windbreakers, and shorts.

Now, we are all well aware that the introduction of spring results in a continued attitude from winter and winter does not want to let go of its cold grip just yet, so temperatures greatly fluctuate during this time.  But that’s neither here nor there, when you have a good 75 degree day to bask in after winter hibernation and dry skin, right?

It has been said through research that a sunny day can certainly affect a person’s mood vastly different than would a cold, cloudy day.  So, how’s your mood these days?  How’s your perspective; your outlook; your attitude; your point of view; your vision?

How are you doing on your 2015 dreams, hopes, and goals?  (By the way, please let us know if we can help you re-analyze your goals and put together an action plan - support@mtnuniversal.com)!

Maybe you have had to re-vamp your goals.  Maybe you have not exercised daily like you were so “gung-ho” about doing at the beginning of the year.  Maybe you are wanting to do some spring cleaning, but just don’t know where to start.  As fast as the days and months are moving, you may feel like you don’t have time to accomplish what you had hoped to thus far.

Well, you know what, please, whatever you do, don’t give up!  We still have HOPE!  We still have time!  You are still breathing and blessed to wake up this morning, so there is still time and there is much work to be done.  It’s Mental!  It’s time to Spring Your Perspective!

“The day the LORD created hope was probably the same day he created Spring.” ~ Bernard Williams

This time of year, everyone’s focus turns to spring cleaning and yard work, and just being outdoors. But, what are you doing for your inner-man; your mind; your dream; your passion; your soul-yearnings?  It’s time to put some spring in your perspective!

It’s time for New Opportunities and New Adventures. New Ways of Thinking and Doing.  It’s time for renewal.  It’s time for refreshment.  It’s time for change.  It’s a new season!

Just how do you put some spring in your perspective?  I’m so glad you asked.  Let’s explore below.

Ways to Spring Your Perspective

1. Refresh your goals

2. Define and apply the principles of discipline

3. Dedicate a certain time each and every single day to quiet your mind

4. Conduct a brain release and tap into your inner heart and thoughts --- write down every single thought you are having right now for a set amount of time

5. Make a commitment that you are going to be positive and optimistic and you are going to fight the negativity “monster” with all your heart, mind, strength, and soul

6. Take the focus off of yourself and serve someone else

7. Say NO!  Plain and simple.

8. Count your many blessings (you should run out of time and space trying to count how blessed you are; your writing hand should start hurting just because you have so much to write down for how blessed and thankful you are).

9. Challenge your mentality

10. Change your eating habits

11. Take an afternoon off

12. Go for a stroll

13. Take a break/detox from electronics

And the list can carry on.

Question: So, question: In what ways can you spring your perspective?  What helps you to refresh and renew at the turn of spring and a new season? How do you weather the seasons of life?  Leave your comments below.

3 Reasons Why You Need a Team

3-Reasons-Why-You-Need-a-Team.jpg

Have you ever been part of an unproductive team?

If you have experienced ineffective teamwork, you know how much of a challenge it can be.  It is hard enough trying to achieve excellence with great teamwork, but it is much harder and almost impossible without teamwork.

Help is needed to accomplish any of our goals, aspirations, and dreams.  I was once told, “If you can accomplish your dream by yourself, your dream isn’t BIG enough.”

The Function of a Team

Working as a team is an interesting concept.  Why?  Because when we work as a team, we accept the challenge of trusting others.

“Learning to trust is one of life’s most difficult tasks.” ~ Isaac Watts

Functioning as a team can be a challenge.  It’s just like putting a puzzle together.  Every piece is needed, but no one piece is the same.

Although everyone on your team will bring unique differences, the primary function of your team will be to work towards the common goal of achieving your dreams.

Why You Need a Team

1. It makes the job easier.  You have heard this cliché many times, “Work smart, not hard.”  Well, a leader does both.  He or she will have to work hard and smart.  I have never met a leader that did not work hard on his or her dream.

Because you will be working hard, select a great team that will help you with the smart portion.  Trust me, there will still be plenty of opportunities for you to work hard even with a great team assisting you with working smart.

2. It holds you accountable.  Whether you are starting a diet, workout program, or a business; it is always good to have a team holding you accountable.

It is easy to commit to an idea with no one holding us accountability, but the “rubber meets the road” once we develop team to hold ourselves accountable.

3. It provides a sense of community.  There’s nothing like having someone who is supportive of what you are attempting to do.  It may be something simple, but knowing you have someone always in your corner at the end of the day is a big plus.

Having a team is helpful on so many levels.  I have had the privilege to be part of some great teams in my career.  When you are attempting to achieve new heights in life, don’t forget that one of the most important keys in getting to the next level is teamwork.

God Cushions the Blows of Life

God-Cushions-the-Blows-of-Life.jpg

Special Guest Post by Kendra Ransom

Have you ever experienced a painful situation?

A painful situation you knew could have been worse, even tragic.  Well, I call that God cushioning the blows of life.

Take for instance, that time you stomped your toe on the corner of the bed frame. Or perhaps, the time you stubbed your leg of the coffee table.  At the initial onset, you thought you broke your toe, but only to find out you only broke your toenail.

Thank God!

How about that time you tripped and fell.  You could have hit your head and loss consciousness, fractured a bone, or torn tendon/ligament.  But you only skinned your knee or elbow.

 Thank God!

What about that car wreck when your car was totaled, but you came out of it with only a bruise or two.  Looking at your wrecked vehicle, you knew you shouldn't have made it at all.

 Thank God!

There are so many situations like these.  I believe these are situations when we should thank God.  God's love is always surrounding us.  He keeps and preserves us.

“Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.” ~ Psalm 121:8

So next time you experience any difficult situation instead of cursing God, THANK GOD!  And just remember it could always be worse.

Question: When has God cushioned a blow for you?  Why are you able to thank God?  Leave your comments below.

The Power In Words

The-Power-In-Words.jpg

Words are powerful!

Just about everything begins or ends with a word.

Since the beginning of time, words have always carried power to inspire or destroy.  Consider the creation of our world.  The creation of our world began with four simple words form God, “Let there be light…”  It wasn’t too long after those words, God began to SPEAK into existence the rest of our world and everything within it.

Think about this, all it takes is a few hurtful and damaging words spoken carelessly or intentionally to start a war.  On the contrary, a few compassionate and loving words has the capability of starting new relationships or mending broken relationships.

Words have also been known to inspire.  Check out this short video.

Be careful with the words you use because all words have power.  Let your words motivate, educate, inspire, and encourage.

Question: Are you aware of the power behind your words?  Leave your comments below.
